Social Quest plays on the addiction of harvesting social approval from social buttons. People continually feed their networks with likes, gambling with the goal of receiving reciprocal likes, which is not dissimilar to the coin dozer machines in arcades. A coin dozer machine is a simple game where people try to time putting their money in so that it knocks other money off a moving platform, often there is no real reward. Social Quest is a virtual copy of these machines, replacing the usual coins with tokens representing ‘likes’. The machine reflects our relationship with online gratification, we see the pile of likes on the edge and think “If only I put a bit more into this, I will have my reward”.

Using this simple game system we can see that the reward is nothing more than a mechanism to keep you playing the pointless game longer. This reflects our interaction with social buttons as virtual stimulation, questioning its fabricated value in reality.
